Under the slogan “Film Goes On,” the JEONJU International Film Festival (JEONJU IFF, Festival Director LEE Joondong) set off to prepare for its 22nd edition, revealing this year’s official poster featuring an alphabet character “J” up and front.

The letter “J” has been at the center of the official poster of the JEONJU IFF since 2020. As an initial letter of the city hosting the festival, it was used to highlight the city brand of Jeonju. Last year’s poster had a letter J in a torn and pasted paper form on the background of a still from a film screened in the JEONJU IFF’s Special Focus section. This year’s poster continues the endeavor to use the letter “J” to represent the identity of the film festival. In addition, the alphabet character J projects a special message via its design features.

KIM Kwangchul, the art director of JEONJU IFF and KIM Taihun, designer of GulzaLab, collaborated to create the poster. The poster contains a simple yet clear image of a quadrilateral standing tall and a column that is cut on one side. These shapes are designed to serve two purposes: first to announce the opening of the festival and second to convey a message from the JEONJU IFF in the era of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The quadrilateral is a metaphor for a pixel, the smallest unit of digital imaging. It represents the identity of JEONJU IFF, which was launched during the era of digital revolution and which has strived to find alternative possibilities of independent films, experimental films, and new media. It is also to remind its viewers of the image of the red cube, which served as a symbol for JEONJU IFF for a while. The column completes the shape of the letter J. It has an aspect ratio of traditional movie screens. It symbolizes future media of films, which of course include mobile phones.

KIM Kwangchul, art director of JEONJU IFF added. “You can think of this year’s alphabet character J as a symbol made of a pixel and a screen. These shapes serve as a symbolic representation of films. We hope to deliver the message that it’s time for us to start anew. We hope to remind ourselves that it’s time to think again about the identity of JEONJU IFF and to think ahead of the future. In the same vein, we hope that this year’s poster gives us one possible answer to the question of what film and film festivals mean to us in the era of the pandemic.”

In order to strengthen the film festival’s brand image, JEONJU IFF will release a set of fonts derived from the alphabet character J unveiled in the official poster. The 22nd JEONJU IFF will be held at Jeonju Film Street from April 29 to May 8, 2021.

A message from KIM Kwangchul, art director of JEONJU IFF

“J” is the initial of JEONJU IFF. We have been showing the alphabet character J since the 21st edition of JEONJU IFF. This year’s J and JEONJU IFF official poster serve the function of announcing the opening of the festival. At the same time, they also serve to deliver the message about the role of JEONJU IFF in the era of the pandemic.

J this year consists of rather simple shapes. Likewise, the combination is not complicated at all. This year’s J is made of a quadrilateral standing tall and a column cut on one side. The quadrilateral stands for a pixel, the smallest unit of digital screens. It symbolizes the identity of JEONJU IFF. JEONJU IFF was launched during the era of digital revolution and it has worked to provide diverse testbeds for alternative possibilities of independent films, experimental films, and new media. The column has an aspect ratio commonly used in traditional movie screens. It symbolizes future media of films, probably best exemplified by mobile phones.

In other words, this year’s alphabet character J is a letter made of a pixel and a screen. Thus, the shapes forming J can be regarded as a means to symbolically represent films. These shapes tell us to think again about the identity of JEONJU IFF. They tell us to think about the future of JEONJU IFF. They also remind us that it is time for us to start anew. With that regard, this year’s official poster is one possible answer to the question of where films and film festivals are heading in the era of the pandemic.

Along with the alphabet character J, we will also release a set of typeface derived from it. We hope it serves an instrumental role to visualize the vision of the 22nd edition of JEONJU IFF.
