A Streetcar Named Desire
"I don´t want realism. I want magic!" So said Blanche sobbing in . The line sums up well what the film speaks about. The story revolves around a woman who strives in vain to escape the vulgar and ugly realities. It begins with Blanche the elegant lady of the South, now down the road of her life, arriving in a ´filthy´ district of New Orleans where her pregnant sister Stella lives with her husband Stanley. As Blanche describes it as unimaginable even in a nightmare, the place gradually proves to be a nightmare suffocating her with the smell of an end. The film brings a focus to her fall through the intense psychological drama unfolding in the confrontation between Blanche and the ´sweaty animal´ Stanley. What makes the confrontation one of the ugliest wars between the sexes in the film history is attributed to the great characterization by actors. Still few would deny that it is Marlon Brando´s presence on the screen ´living´ the animal Stanley that left an indelible impression of the film on the audience.
