Review

In December 1989, the people of Romania overthrew Ceausescu’s dictatorship, and the dictator was uted. Videograms of a Revolution, a joint production by Harun Farocki and Andrei Ujica, studies how images can portray revolution, and the kind of messages that images send on revolution. This ‘documentary’ is made from historic footage of the revolution - images taken by professional and amateur cameramen - taken from December 20 through 25,1989. Farocki and Ujica view history through these visual records. Strictly speaking, what they see are not visual accounts of the revolution, but images as a meaning system. In other words, the camera is not only an instrument that records and broadcasts history, but is also an important part of history itself.
