DIRECTOR
JEON Kyuhwan
Director Jeon Kyuhwan received international interest as he presented the “town” trilogy, Mozart Town (2008), Animal Town (2009), Dance Town (2010), which embodies his unique style of gazing into suffering figures. Animal Town was screened in Jeonju. Later on, he expanded his theme from From Seoul to Varanasi (2011) to The End (2017), constantly creating works that express the anxiety and fear lurking amongst the everyday lives of married couples. At times, Jeon was compared to the American director Cassavetes because of his commercial style and the way his camera gazes into the faces. The moments in his films when the Western style and the Eastern sentiment merge materialize intense images based on violence. His recent film Wonderful Woman traces the figure’s daily life in a softened and relaxed manner, despite the underlying anger and resentment.
