“JEONJU Cinema Project: Next Edition” revives in 3 years
- 8 projects from Korea and overseas, the final competition in the project pitching program on May 2nd

The 23rd JEONJU International Film Festival (JEONJU IFF, Festival Director LEE Joondong) revives “JEONJU Cinema Project: Next Edition” in three years, a project pitching event to select the final projects for the JEONJU Cinema Project.
"JEONJU Cinema Project: Next Edition" is a pitching program to select films that will be world premiered next year in "JEONJU Cinema Project," the representative industry program of JEONJU IFF that covers the entire production process of feature projects. One for each project from Korea and abroad finally selected after the pitching event will receive a maximum budget of KRW 100 million, and the selected international project will receive the support for distribution in Korea as well as production funding.
For 60 days from November 15, 2021, to January 13, 2022, the JEONJU IFF received a total of 41 submissions (17 Korean and 24 international projects) from 23 countries of 6 continents through a call for entries for the "JEONJU Cinema Project: Next Edition". Korean projects selected for JEONJU Cinema Project: Next Edition include: Tae Jun-sik’s 1997, Fixed Love, Fixed Girl directed by Lim Sun-ae of An Old Lady, Jero Yun’s Breath, and Lee Sangcheol’s My Dear about schooling education for children with disabilities, based on the original essay, 『I Reject the Term “The Village Idiot” 』.
International projects selected for the "JEONJU Cinema Project: Next Edition" include Khoroldorj Choijoovanchig’s Colors of White Rock, Isiah Medina’s Gangsterism, Lam Can-zhao’s Reality Show, and Jose Luis Torres Leiva’s When Clouds Hide the Shadow.
The pitching event for these eight projects was held at 2 pm, on Monday, May 2 at LAHAN Hotel Jeonju, Ongoeul Hall1 and the final selection was made through the jury meeting on the same day.
The jury members include Cristina Nord, head of Berlinale Forum, Daniel Kasman, MUBI´s Vice President of Content, film director Kim Jong-kwan, who directed Shades of The Heart (2019) and Josee (2020), Lee Choong-jik, former festival director of JEONJU IFF, and Sung Moon, JEONJU IFF programmer. The final selection will be announced at the 14th JEONJU Project Awards Ceremony to be held on Tuesday, May 3 at 6 pm.
The 23rd JEONJU IFF, which opened on Thursday, April 28, is held in the Jeonju Film Street area until Saturday, May 7, and is screened online through ONFIFN, an online platform dedicated to Korean film festivals.
Jury of JEONJU Cinema Project: Next Edition
1. Cristina NORD | Berlinale/Arsenal-Institute for Film and Video Art, Head of Forum
Born in Korbach, Germany, she studied general and comparative literature in Berlin and Latin American studies in San Jose, Costa Rica. After graduating with a Master of Arts, she worked as a journalist and editor. Between 2002 and 2015, she was film editor for the culture section of the German taz. die tageszeitung newspaper. In parallel, she taught film criticism at the Freie Universitat Berlin, was a member of the selection panel for the German-language documentary film festival Duisburger Filmwoche. She contributed to the Filmtip programme for the German broadcaster WDR and wrote numerous essays, and the book True Blood (Diaphanes, Berlin and Zurich 2015).
In 2015, she began working at the Goethe Institut and took over as head of programming for the South West European region in Brussels.
2. Daniel KASMAN | MUBI, Vice President of Content
Born in California. He is the VP of Content at MUBI, a curated subscription-based streaming service. Additionally, Daniel is the Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Notebook, MUBI’s daily international film publication and biannual print magazine.
3. KIM Jong-kwan | Director
He directed films including Worst Woman (2016), The Table (2016), Josee (2020), and Shades of the Heart (2021). Currently working on various projects including performances, exhibitions, publications, and music videos.
4. LEE Choong-jik | Former Festival Director of JEONJU International Film Festival
Born in Boeun, Korea. After earning his BA and MA in Theater and Film at the College of Arts at Chung-Ang University, he studied Production at ESRA (Ecole Superieure de Realisation Audio-Visuelle) in France. He served as the festival director of the 1st Seoul Intl. Independent Film Festival, director of the 2nd Korean Film Council, director of the Digital Cinema Promotion Committee, and the dean of the Graduate School of Advanced Imaging Science at Chung-Ang University. In 2015, he was appointed as the festival director of JEONJU IFF and worked until 2019.
5. Sung MOON | JEONJU International Film Festival Programmer
Starting with the JEONJU IFF program team in 2004, she has been active in film festivals and documentary industry forums, including the Busan IFF, JEONJU Project, and Docs Port Incheon. She had worked at the Korean Film Council as a representative of Latin America for eight years since 2012 and founded the Buenos Aires Korean Film Festival in Argentina in 2014. She has been working as a programmer for JEONJU IFF since 2019. Also, she is an editor of the books including I AM INDEPENDENTE - Beyond Mainstream: 7 Women Directors (2021), What Will Be Of Cinema? (2021), and Introduction to the Quay Brothers: Stop Motion, Dormitorium, Drawings (2020).
