The 22nd JEONJU International Film Festival
In 2020, the sudden outbreak of COVID-19 had a profound impact on not only the JEONJU IFF, but also all film festivals around the world. JEONJU IFF showed a possibility by successfully holding the "online screenings" and “long-term screenings” in the early days of the pandemic. JEONJU IFF was unable to have audiences offline as usual, but it gave a little bit of courage and hope to filmmakers at home and abroad. We will make various efforts at the 22nd JEONJU IFF to continue to fulfill the proposition, “Film Goes On.”
JEONJU IFF was one of the first international film festivals that held a hybrid event completely during the COVID-19 pandemic, combining in-theater and online screenings. Based on the previous experience, the 22nd edition will take place as usual for 10 days. JEONJU IFF is preparing detailed plans depending on social distancing levels and quarantine measures and trying to figure out the best way to hold events and screenings, involving both public and online.
As mentioned above, the 21st JEONJU IFF has been a model for domestic and international film festivals by attempting a new type of film festival despite the sudden outbreak of the pandemic. However, COVID-19 has continued to affect our daily lives and, as a result, has led to a situation that makes many people feel tired and lost.
The 22nd JEONJU IFF prepared a section "Special Focus: Corona, New Normal" to look back on the profound impact of the COVID-19 on our lives and to look at films that paid attention to changes in the world. The films about the aspects and influences of the COVID-19 pandemic seen by directors from around the world, including Korea, will create a consensus on the current situation and become a place to think about the way out of it.
JEONJU IFF has been discovering and supporting films that are independent of all outside pressures such as customs, capital, and politics for over 20 years. In the era of rapidly changing platforms and in an environment where only big-budget films are paid attention, JEONJU IFF recognizes that independent films should be more noticed and valued, and tries to ruminate on their essence and spirit through the films that have played an important role in the film history. As the first plan for this, we present “Special Focus: I am Independent,” which sheds light on independent films by women directors. The special section will be an ambitious project to focus on their achievements, through the films of seven women directors who have been forgotten or not mentioned well but are an important part of independent film history. In particular, this section, where the films of seven women directors are covered by seven women critics, will be a meaningful special project that corrects the status of those who are not properly evaluated in the mainstream and provides courage and energies to future independent filmmakers. With the special section as an opportunity, JEONJU IFF will continue planning to deal with the history and archives of independent films, arousing interest in the films from various perspectives, and laying the foundation for creating an alternative history of independent film culture.
Since it has been hard to invite guests abroad and contactless events have become a part of our life, film festivals have to make a change. Last year, JEONJU IFF organized all jury members in Competitive sections living in Korea and Korean filmmakers for program events. However, the 22nd edition will adopt online evaluations that involve leading foreign filmmakers and online program events to keep up with the global virtual trend.
"JEONJU Project Market", which has been supporting the independent and art film creators from Korea and abroad since 2009, will be operated under the name of "JEONJU Project" from this year. The JEONJU Project has designed the support program for the production process of each film while dividing the entire process of production according to certain standards, in order to reflect the constantly changing film production conditions and the voices of the creator. In line with the new media era, it also expands the target of the existing support project, which was limited to feature films and documentary films, to various genres such as experimental films, web dramas, and short forms.
JEONJU Project is launching JEONJU Conference, which covers the world and Korean film industry from diverse angles. JEONJU Conference will present the values to be considered and ask questions for the film and content industry in this fast-changing media environment. JEONJU IFF prepared this new program with an ambition to create an event where all about the discourse could happen in one place. JEONJU Conference 2021 will run for three days under the topic of “Film Goes on: What Connects Us.”
JEONJU IFF has sought many ways to realize a festival for citizens to enjoy. There have been opinions that Jeonju citizens’ participation rate is lower than moviegoers from other regions so far, so we plan to adopt pre-sale tickets for Jeonju citizens. We will sell 20% exclusive tickets for Jeonju citizens before the official general ticketing out of all available seats according to the distancing regulations. It is our effort to step closer to Jeonju citizens who have not been able to visit the theaters in the meantime. Also, we will create an opportunity for Jeonju citizens to enjoy our festival by Street Screenings where audiences can watch films out of theaters during the festival.
The 22nd JEONJU IFF aims to improve the situation in which Jeonju citizens have not been able to get tickets to the film festival so far and has been rather excluded by the festival and people from other regions. Of course, we do not know how the situation of the COVID-19 pandemic will unfold. But in preparation for the case where offline screenings can be held even at the smallest scale, JEONJU IFF intends to serve Jeonju citizens who have not been able to visit the theater in the meantime by establishing an advanced reservation system for the citizens. In addition, we are working hard to make Jeonju citizens meet the films presented by JEONJU IFF in various ways, such as providing coupons for movies to enjoy them comfortably at home, even if only online screenings are available this year as in 2020.
Based on the reflection on too large-scale of the World Cinema section at the 21st edition, the 22nd JEONJU IFF revives the section Front Line that introduces provocative and experimental films, helping the audience choose films to watch.
Also, we enlarge the investment size of JEONJU Cinema Project by collaborating with other organizations and strengthen the role of a film festival for the development of the film production environment. We hope these efforts make the groundwork for filmmakers to continue to make their films.
Last but not least, JEONJU IFF will set the stage to produce and expand various discussions and criticisms about films by publishing books. This year’s festival is preparing books for publication, such as What Will Be Of Cinema?, I am Independent – 7 Female Directors, and J-Magazine.
We are making more efforts in the local competition programs that have been discovering filmmakers working in Jeonju and various regions of Jeollabuk-do, and looking for ways to connect them with JEONJU Short Project.
