The Silence Before Bach

Pere Portabella
Spain 2007 102min 35mm color Fiction
Review

Pere Portabella, from Barcelona, is more commonly known as the utive producer who worked with Carlos Saura Atares and Luis Bunuel in the 1960s. In fact, he was the utive producer of Luis Bunuel s Viridiana(1961). In his latest film The Silence Before Bach, Pere Portabella, who was born in 1929, incorporates diversified perspectives into short stories, which are interwoven with the music of Johann Sebastian Bach. The movie starts with an automatic piano playing The Goldberg Variations. A piano tuner, a truck driver playing Bach on his harmonica, Bach playing in Saint Thomas Cathedral, a travel guide in Leipzig dressed up as Bach, Bach teaching his son to play Well-tempered Klavier, Mendelsohn finding out the piano score to Saint Matthew Passion on the butcher´s wrapping paper, groups of cellists playing Suite for Solo Cello on the subway, the owner of a musical instruments shop working in Germany and Spain, and cellists visiting the Saint Thomas Cathedral choir all have connections with each other, yet, at the same time, are mainly used as a means of making image transitions in this film. The film inevitably transcends all time and space and connects the segmented narratives via profound music and images.
