Jaegi, who has lived the life of a disabled person due to a traffic accident, is judged as Level 5 at the first grade screening. Jaegi strives to become a severely disabled person, but the situation is getting more difficult.
Set in Jeju Island, this film was co-directed by two filmmakers, one disabled and the other non-disabled, and the crew was also made up of disabled and non-disabled people—this is possibly the reason that this film plainly shows the inside of the world of people with disabilities, which is difficult for non-disabled people to access. Awoke not only points out the flaws and problems in the system necessary for disabled people to lead their lives, such as disability rating, support for the employment of people with disabilities, loans for people with disabilities, and other mobility assistance services but also highlights the structure of exploitation within the society of disabled people. In such a contradictory environment, Jaegi, the protagonist of this film, is unable to receive the benefits because his disability was rated Grade 5 despite its severity, and he is under the thumb of a “heavyweight” disabled person named Byeongho, who is well aware of such defects in the system. This seems to be the present state of Korea, which is dreaming of becoming a powerhouse of social welfare. (MOON Seok)
