Overview

A new virus (a.k.a “fantomal virus”) is transmitted to a small rural village. Dasol, a three-month nurse working in the village hospital, is being workplace bullying (a.k.a “burned”). In the meantime, Dasol begins to educate a new nurse Eunbi earlier than expected due to the poor ward situation.

Review

According to the Korean dictionary, “taeum” means “the act of burning down someone’s spirit to the ashes.” In today’s Korea, taeum refers to the mental and physical abuse inflicted on junior nurses by their seniors under the name of training. Influenza is a film that closely exposes the truth about this horrible hazing practice that even claimed the lives of several nurses. A certain set of regulations is necessary for hospitals with frequent emergencies, but more than necessary emotions and abuse accompany nurses who work at those hospitals—this is the reality of taeum that Influenza exposes. The film also shows the structured cycle of abuse, in which a nurse who has completed training comes to train and be responsible for her juniors and repeat the abuse that she had received in her junior years. Distinguishing between the past and present via different screen ratios, this film tries to overcome the limitations of space and characters. Influenza is full of exuberant ambition that makes up for moments of inexperience. (MOON Seok)
