Overview

Park Dongsu is living on his own after leaving the disabled facility where he first started writing poems. While having a hard time writing poems, he buys a fish called “corydoras.” Looking at the fish for a long time, he falls asleep and dreams of where he used to live. Then he heads there to find traces of his poems.

Review

Corydoras is a documentary that quietly captures the life of the disabled poet Park Dongsu. At first glance, his independent life after long years in an institution does not seem different from other people’s. Although he may be physically challenged, he is surrounded by cheerful friends and beloved poetry. He is even elegantly intelligent, capable of answering people who hurl abusive comments online with class and dignity. The film, however, delicately captures the loneliness and solitude seen through the gaps in between. Not only his blank stare as he admires the ornamental fish corydoras or his desperate voice as he speaks out about the agony of writing poetry, but also the scene where he dances on an electric wheelchair mounted with lights, melancholy spreads throughout the film. Showing PARK Dongsu as a person that he is rather than objectifying him as a person with a disability, Corydoras draws the viewers into his desolate inner world. (MOON Seok)
