Overview

Jina is the top employee at a credit card company call center. She avoids building close relationships, choosing instead to live and work alone. One day, her irritating next-door neighbor who would attempt to talk with her is discovered dead, several days after having died alone in his apartment. Jina is shaken and turns on the home camera installed at her mother’s house a long time ago.

Review

Naholojok, a Korean term for people who do everything alone, are no longer people who only appear on the news. Particularly due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there is now an infinite number of people like Jina, the protagonist of this film, who works alone, eats alone, and rests alone. Dismissing the proposition that “humans are social animals” as an old relic of the past, loners seem to be the most modern beings, leading a life all by themselves without much difficulty. Aloners is a film that subtly captures the ruptures in the life of Jina, a loner who dislikes and rejects communicating with others. Having shut and locked the doors to her heart after her mother’s death, Jina avoids interacting with her father, neighbors, and coworkers, but she is unable to set aside the scent of solitude and fear that seeps in through the cracks. Particularly memorable in this film is the performance put on by Kong Seungyeon, who expresses her emotions in most scenes through her expressionless face as she talks on the phone or has a conversation with others.
