Without You
An old couple, Kim Su and Park Won used to work as janitors. The COVID-19 situation gets worse and their last working place, a wedding hall, closes down. It has been a long while since they have stayed together at home. They see the same car, which prints photos in a market at different times.
At the desolate entrance of Seonam Market, some people are disinfecting the area. They covered their faces with masks in their white protective clothing. The short opening clearly shows where the film starts. It takes us to last year’s spring in Daegu that had gone through extremely harsh times. After losing a job due to the COVID-19, the couple, Kim Soo and Park Won stay at home. The elderly couple’s life goes quiet and slow. The director calmly observes their boring life. However, when you follow the attentive camera, you witness their well-aged affection in old household goods and their exchange without words. There often come times of loneliness and frustration. Without You intends to record the tumultuous times all of us have gone through and contain the times we haven’t noticed. When the camera is outside the house, it watches them from a distance. The gaze feels like trying to save their place in the uncertain, troubled world. (CHA Hanbi)
