Winter Mourning
Jinhee feels lost and drifts between her reality and dreams. She tries her best to cling to life and to stay afloat, despite her suffering. One day, she hears a cat´s meow that makes her mood lift. Every day after, Jinhee waits for the cat, anticipating the little bit of color and delight the cat brings to her world.
Yun Dahee’s Winter Mourning starts with black and white scenes of a snowy winter forest. When the black and white scene changes into color, the reality which is the opposite of the dreamlike introduction scenes. One day, Jinhee (KOO Ja-eun) hears the meowing sound. There is another existence that is invisible, but only hearable: Jinhee’s noisy neighbors. The noise around Jinhee never seems to go down. A tiny aperture in the wall of the restaurant’s toilet, news about a Korean who was arrested for secretly taking videos of women, an Uber driver making small talk and expecting her answers, and so on. However, something starts changing. What leads Jinhee to the tranquility of the place filled with snow, water, and tree out of reality? Is it a cat, or time of the winter? The film brilliantly captures quiet winter landscape with bold lines. (LEE Dahyeh)
