The House is Black│Khaneh Siah Ast
Set in a leper colony in the north of Iran, The House is Black juxtaposes "ugliness," of which there is much in the world as stated in the opening scenes, with religion and gratitude.
This documentary has created such an astounding rhythm and a new format and that it’s hard to believe that it was made by a poet that had never studied films nor led a film crew before. The director´s personal history, neglected by the conservative Iranian society and family because of her poetry that boldly expressed women’s desire, meets the suffering of the Hansen´s nursing home, displays the injustice of fate and religious ideology, and asks questions about human dignity. “Intellectuals are people who try to make a spiritual advance to solve the problem of ethics, in addition to trying to make an external development in life,” the director said and adopted a nursing home boy who appeared in the film once the filming was over. The House is Black is a cinematic poet written with a heart full of intelligence and love. (Sung MOON)
