Overview

Wanda, a lonely housewife, drifts through the mining country until she meets a petty thief who takes her in.

Review

Barbara Loden´s one and only feature film that she left in this world. It took 11 years to complete this adaptation of a true story of a woman entangled in a bank robbery while wandering the streets. The film attracted the critics’ attention as it was invited to the Venice Film Festival and Cannes Film Festival, but it became an uneasy film for the audience at the time with its anti-hero and unconventional story—in other words, this film doesn’t suggest an enterprising image of woman, nor did it teach a lesson or presented a catharsis. Instead, it reveals the existential anxiety of women who are unable to live as independent entities if they do not play the role of women as dictated by the society in the patriarchal system. As the renowned novelist Marguerite Duras said, "There are miracles in Wanda!” (Sung MOON)
