Review

In the mid-19th century, in a remote village in the northeastern United States, Abigail and her husband Dyer did farming and lived an isolated life. The couple, who live with the wounded heart of losing their young daughter to illness, live an ascetic life and have a discreet personality. One day, the new couple moved near Abigail’s house then she has attracted by the honesty and charm of her new neighbor Tallie. Abigale and Tallie spoke their mind about loveless marriage and their grumpy patriarchal husband. They fell in love as they got closer. Husbands got to know about the relationship and their marriages end up in ruin.
Based on the novel of the same name by Jim Shephard, The World to Come, is the second feature film of Mona Fastvold, a Norwegian actor who became a director. The work paints delicately how the friendship between two farmers’ wives changes in deep love. The actress Katherine Waterston and Vanessa Kirby showed outstanding performance in describing the detailed emotional changes. (CHUN Jinsu)
