Jikji Route; Terra Incognita

WOO Kwang-hoon
Korea 2021 97min DCP color/b&w Documentary G World Premiere
Overview

The documentary production team, which was tracking the connection between Gutenberg and Goryeo metal types, finds the "Pope´s Letter to King of Goryeo" in the Vatican archives. In the face of opposition from scholars for lack of relevant evidence, they leave for Europe in search of historical traces to complement it.

Review

The film is the sequel to Dancing with Jikji (2017), a nomination for competition in Korean Cinema of JEONJU IFF. Following its previous work, which found a clue that Gutenberg imitated the Goryeo-era metal type technology, this film attempts to prove the hypothesis by collecting concrete evidence. The production crew travels 40,000 kilometers in nine countries for coverage and filming this time, and Ariane Desgagnés-Leclerc, a Canadian broadcaster who is fluent in French and Korean as well as Chinese characters, was outstanding in the film. However, it is not easy to overturn what has been accepted for over 500 years in a short time and to prove new historical facts. While the production crew travels around Europe along the route of "metal type" and goes to Uzbekistan in search of the route of paper for printing with it, they still have a hard time getting evidence from major museums. This is a very interesting film just to listen to their intellectual discussions as we follow this journey. (MOON Seok)
