The Last City

Heinz EMIGHOLZ
Germany 2020 101min DCP color Fiction 15 Korean Premiere
Overview

An archeologist and a weapons designer meet at an archeological excavation site in the Negev Desert and begin discussing love and war; a conversation they continue in the Israeli city of Be’er Sheva. A round dance that takes us to the cities of Athens, Berlin, Hong Kong, and São Paulo.

Review

Emigholz, best known for his experimental documentaries concerning architecture and scenery, came back with this dreamy fiction. The two principal characters, John Erdman and Jonathan Perel, who were walking around the streets of Uruguay in Streetscapes [Dialogue] (2017), are relocated to an Israeli industrial city of Be’er Sheba. The film begins with this déjà-vu then proceeds with changing some of its main characters. The urban background changes from Israel to Athens, Berlin, Hong Kong, and São Paulo. They discuss social taboos such as war crimes, sex, racial discrimination, and so on, as if we are all dancing an infinite round dance, as mentioned in the film. Right after The Last City, Emigholz takes us to Buenos Aires to continue telling his story in The Lobby. (Sung MOON)
