Daïchi SAÏTO
Canada, Japan 2021 30min 35mm color Experimental G Asian Premiere
Overview

Dawn breaks where land is flesh
And bones’ echoes;
You’ve lived through extinctions –
Stars, skies, sand, and seas;
Future is catching us up at last,
And all the dead are ahead of us.

Review

An unrestricted depiction of the Andes, composed only with images and sounds, creates a subliminal sensation to awe the viewers. Visual aspects created by Daïchi Saïto in this 35mm film oscillates with saxophonist Jason Sharp’s improvisation to generate overwhelming synchrony. Daïchi Saïto is a Montreal-based filmmaker who artfully finds out the illusion of light and vision based on the most traditional materials for filmmaking. Although the running time is rather short, the film is more than sufficient to provide us with unprecedented sensory experiences of a cinematographic meditation. (Sung MOON)
