Set in the port town of Dover, Mary Hussain suddenly finds herself a widow following the unexpected death of her husband. A day after the burial, she discovers he has a secret just 21 miles across the English Channel in Calais.
After the sudden passing of her husband Ahmed, Mary, who lives in Dover, England, finds a photo of her deceased husband with a woman. Then, she learns that the woman lives in Calais, France, which is just 30kms away from Dover. After a long thought, Mary goes to visit Calais to meet the woman in the photo, Geneviève. Upon meeting Mary, Geneviève thinks Mary is from a cleaning agency and asks her to do some housework. Mary goes along with the mistake, hoping to observe her husband’s secret family. Mary and Ahmed had no kids, but Geneviève lives with Ahmed’s son, Solomon.
After Love is the first film by Aleem Khan, director of English-Pakistani heritage. He successfully takes a story that can be way too ordinary—a secret love between two women and one man—and turns it into an engaging and expansive discourse concerning differences, clash, and convergence between two cultures represented by a Pakistani woman and a French woman. After Love was invited to Cannes Critic’s Week in 2020. (CHUN Jinsu)
