A troubled mixed-race teenager who suffers from discrimination and bullying, wins a scholarship to study abroad, while also discovering his father has been hiding cancer and has only days to live.
Gwangyong is born in Seoul between a Taiwanese father and a Korean mother and has a nickname ‘Jang-Gae’ for the whole life since a kid. Although he doesn’t talk with his Dad much, who is a conservative workaholic, he could overcome all of those discriminations thanks to his mother who gives full support and endless warm love to him. The racism and bullying at the school get even worse after he moves from a Chinese school overseas to a public middle school in Korea due to his father. He studies even harder to stay strong and win over the discrimination. One day, Gwangyong is so thrilled after hearing from his teacher that he is going to be selected to study in the U.S. But soon he’s fallen into another misfortune.
This is the debut feature film based on the autobiographical story of director Chang Chih-Wei, who was also born to a Taiwanese father and a Korean mother, similar to the main character Gwangyong. (CHUN Jinsu)
