Overview

In 1989 an ambitious young woman gets a weave in order to succeed in the image-obsessed world of music television. However, her flourishing career may come at a great cost when she realizes that her new hair may have a mind of its own.

Review

The setting that the hair extension has a soul is somehow familiar. Bad Hair has been inspired by the Korean horror film Wig by Won Shin-yun. The film sets in the U.S. in the late 1980s when music television was extremely popular. Anna works in a music television, and she can produce an interesting program, but the new head of the music network tells her to get a weave. After Anna follows the suggestion and gets extension hair, she becomes a star. The director Justin Simien received praise for Dear White People (2014) which depicts a campus culture war between blacks and whites when a black student trying to become a president of the student association of the Ivy League University. Through the theme of hair, he again criticizes racism and image-obsessed views against black people. (MOON Seok)
