As cryptozookeepers struggle to capture a baku, a legendary dream-eating hybrid creature, they begin to wonder if they should display these rare beasts in the confines of a zoo, or if these mythical creatures should remain hidden and unknown.
Cryptozoo is a 1960’s San Francisco-based animation film. It mixes characteristic genres of horror, fantasy, Sci-Fi, and more. Cryptozoo is a place where rescued mythological creatures are gathered. The zookeepers try to capture the dream-eating creature Baku. However, the military´s involvement in chasing Baku leads to a chaotic and miserable situation. The military plans to use Baku to eat the dreams of the anti-Vietnam War movement activists who were on the front line in this era. The film seems to dedicate a “critical homage” to the whole period of the anti-Vietnam War movement, civil rights movement for women and Black Americans, drugs, and psychedelic music existed together. It is the second feature by Dash Shaw who visited JEONJU IFF with the film My Entire High School Sinking Into the Sea. (MOON Seok)
