Review

Coronation is a documentary showing the scenery inside Wuhan, China, where COVID-19 originated, during the 76-day lockdown. The film contains vivid and various activities starting with the rough journey entering Wuhan, the grave hospital beds, the worn-out medical team, the help distributing supplies to the citizens, to the exhibition-like events by the Communist Party and authorities. Like many COVID-19 related documentaries, this film also enlisted the help of collective creation. The images of downtown Wuhan, filmed by numerous citizens, were delivered and completed by Ai Weiwei, a world-renowned artist and human rights activist living in Europe to avoid interference from the Chinese government. The film captures the cynical view of the suffering of Wuhan citizens toward the government. The scenes shot by drone are impressive, like his previous film Human Flow (2017) which was screened at JEONJU IFF. (MOON Seok)
