During the COVID-19 lockdown in Helsinki, Finland. Three men get together in an empty bar under serious financial pressure during the lockdown. They bond over a long night of fine wine and intellectual discussion about their lives.
Mika Kaurismäki was planning to make a film about three middle-aged men gathered at a bar sharing deep life stories. Originally, it was scheduled to film in Dubai. By the time all the casting and planning was completed, the COVID-19 pandemic started and everything fell through. However, he did not give up. Finland was also under lockdown, but taking advantage of the fact that the film could be shot in a limited space, he was able to recruit the bar his brother Aki Kaurismäki manages (Surprising, the bar’s name is Corona.) Gracious Night captures the scenery and tranquil atmosphere of Helsinki under lockdown. It also gives a glimpse into the people living in this era. Wine could have contributed for the three men to open up and passionately share their stories, but above all, the loneliness caused by the COVID-19 crisis would have had the greatest impact.
