Overview

In the last two years, only 7% of Billboard´s top 100 DJ list were female. Underplayed explores gender inequality through the lens of the electronic music scene and the women championing the change over the summer festival season.

Review

In the music industry, women take up less than three percent in the production and technical area. Only six percent of the DJs in 150 world-renown clubs are female. And in the Top 100 DJs announced by Billboard Magazine in 2018, only five of them were women. These mysterious statistics drew Stacey Lee’s attention when she was preparing for her feature-length documentary debut. In the era where women thrive in various fields, the music industry and EDM world are still dominated by men. (Though there are still many fields that face the same situation.) Underplayed shows the struggles of talented female DJs such as Alison Wonderland, Sherelle, and REZZ, who still shine under such unequal circumstances. The film offers the audience a chance to take a second look at women’s status in various fields of society beyond the realm of EDM. (CHUN Jinsu)
