Overview

What is the meaning of military occupation? Through the testimonies of the soldiers who implemented it, director Avi Mograbi provides insights on how a colonialist occupation works and the logic at work behind those practices. Using the 54-year Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories of the West Bank and Gaza Strip, the director draws us a “Manual for Military Occupation.”

Review

Avi Mograbi has made documentaries that posed questions in our society, highlighting important figures and events despite little materials and resources. At times he uses a classical form to keep viewers’ attention on topics that are political or may be difficult to cover, and also freely uploads his own videos on YouTube. Mograbi uses interviews and archive materials in this film as well, but he appears in it himself to tell the story with his unique style. Positioning himself as a guide, he explains how Israel came to occupy Palestinian territories of the West Bank and Gaza Strip, pretending it’s one example of how a country can perpetrate an occupation. This complex topic is plainly explained by Mograbi with his extensive knowledge, but the fact that this problem still does not have an answer reminds us of the unfortunate reality. (Sung MOON)
