Three illegal miners journey back to their island after months of toiling in hellish conditions. With their hard-earned money, they traverse the sea, the mountains, and the forest until they reach their destination. Or did they really reach their cursed place?
Winner of the Orizzonti Award for Best Director at the 77th Venice International Film Festival. In this new film, Lav Diaz questions the animalistic instinct of humans. No matter how hard they work, the three-day laborers are mired in debt and are unable to take care of their families or live properly due to the chain of labor exploitation. In search of a better-paying job and a better life, they trek into the wild, but money breeds discontent in the most basic sense even among friends who are like family and lead to their downfall. Humans believe that they are the lords of creation, but in reality, they are only part of nature; they believe that they are civilized, but they simply don’t want to see that they are living and behaving like animals.
