What Will Summer Bring

Ignacio CEROI
Argentina 2021 87min DCP color Documentary 12 Asian Premiere
Overview

Charles, a Frenchman from Toulouse, sells his camcorder. Ignacio, an Argentine film director visiting France, buys this camera. Upon opening it, he discovers that Charles’s videos have not been erased and sees in them a potential worldwide adventure film.

Review

What Will Summer Bring turns us into characters from Alice in Wonderland. Its semblance with a cute little documentary project is quite misleading. It takes us to the least expected places, driving us to the point where we can no longer discern reality and fiction. The film starts with a scene where a filmmaker buys a camcorder from an old man, who did not erase his videos from the machine. The film even makes its viewers suspect whether the first scene was true or not. Or, ultimately the film asks us whether anything is true at all. Confusion and perplexity might not be the best words to describe the feelings that the film gives us. What if we say, it leaves us the joy of discovering a new territory; for narrative structure, a key component of films, still saves something new for us to discover. Where does the future of cinema lie? Probably on a VHS videotape that is either lost or deliberately hiding itself from us. (Sung MOON)
