Overview

Karim, a musician, needs to sell his most precious possession to leave Syria and only has thirteen days to do it. As he wraps the instrument, a terrorist leader bursts into the apartment and destroys it.

Review

Occupied by ISIS, Syria’s Shaqqa has already stopped functioning as a city due to the civil war. Karim, a pianist in his 20s, lives with a group of refugees under a building. His dream is to proceed to Europe to play the piano with an orchestra, but the reality he faces is anarchy full of bullets and violence. His only happiness is to play the piano handed down by his mother, but his only hope is selling the piano to get money to escape to Europe. One day, ISIS comes to Karim’s place and shoots bullets into the piano, insisting it’s a symbol of Western capitalism. Karim’s dream seems to disappear. However, Karim, who wants to fix the piano at any cost, hears that the same-model piano is in a city far away and goes on a reckless journey to find it.
Karim’s hope, courage, and his dream toward art in the dark period unfold with great intensity in the debut feature by the Lebanese director Jimmy Keyrouz. He has modified his graduation film Nocturne in Black to a feature. A world-class Lebanese film music composer Gabriel Yared has joined to increase the quality of the film even further. (CHUN Jinsu)
