Overview

Daniela is unsure about what to do next and where to live. Mia is finishing a master’s degree that she spontaneously started. Along with Natascha, another friend thinking of moving to Vienna, they wander around and talk. An insomniac’s hang-out film.

Review

Daniela has sleep problems and suffers anxiety. And she lives coming and going from different cities while interacting with people she comes across on the street and talks about books, dissertations, and relationships. Without knowing each other’s deep history and context of life, they share rooms and attend parties. They share each other’s present moment by picking up each other’s items left at their ex-boyfriend’s house. People living nomads in this digital age feel old-fashioned as they prefer to have a walk in the park and have face-to-face conversations. However, this method seems to be a spiritual practice to sustain their lives. Accidental relationships naturally signal the start and end like change of seasons. Cities and environments change, but their way of life continues. The natural and realistic dialogue of Outside Noise, which attempts to escape the external noise called world, is achieved by active participation of non-professional actors. This is third feature film by director Ted Fendt, who has established his own style with 16mm analogue images and characters who feel lost. (Sung MOON)
