A Night at the Opera

Sergei LOZNITSA
France 2020 20min DCP color/b&w Fiction G Korean Premiere
Overview

Based on photographic archives, Ukrainian film director Sergei Loznitsa invites you to live a fantastic evening at the Garnier. With great fanfare, international stars of the 1950 and 1960s and Paris´s crème de la crème are climbing the steps of the Palais Garnier in front of ecstatic audiences to listen to Maria Callas.

Review

This film uses the archive photos of Gala performances organized by the Paris Opera during the 1950s and 1960s. The camera flashes across important figures and celebrities from France and around the world, including faces familiar to us such as Grace Kelly, Brigitte Bardot, Queen Elizabeth, and Charles de Gaulle. The cheering fans’ reaction to celebrities is interesting, but the person who decorates the film’s climax is Maria Callas, who sings “Una voce poco fa” from Gioachino Rossini’s opera The Barber of Seville. (Sung MOON)

* This film is screened with Two Forgotten Boxes - a trip to Vietnam of Masters Section.
