Review

Former CEO of Taehung Pictures, the late Lee Taewon’s interest to recruit great directors finally resulted in the films that have meanings not only in Korean film history but also in the socio-cultural aspect. It is Lee Doo-yong’s first film made under the roof of Taehung, who was famous for his action films in the 1970s. After The Hut (1980) and Spinning The Tales of Cruelty Towards Women (1983) were invited to the Venice IFF and Cannes Film Festival respectively, he became more confident in his talent as an auteur filmmaker. Reflecting his own experience, Lee explored the patriarchal family structure in this film which faltered between traditional and modern society. His description of falling tradition yielding its place to the modern world is quite impressive at the end of the film. The Mother’s coffin that could not fit into the elevator descending with the ropes from the apartment building catches the eyes of not only the Sons and Daughters but also those of the audience.
