I’ve been to your old neighborhood. It was wonderful.
Although subjects may vanish, cameras remain still. Films tend to begin in such abandoned places, trusting that traces are imprinted there and mourning over the puddle of particles and emotions of those who have left the place. Jang Yun-mi’s new film brings the perspective and traces of road view images to the logic of the camera as it instills subjective reality to a place that was engraved in a digital space. What resonates gradually through her attempt to skillfully and boldly balance the junctions of images with narration is the voice of a serene awakening that she would never reach the core of the subject, no matter how desperately she explores.
