When released in 1987, Our Joyful Young Days was recognized as a unique romance film with unfamiliar grammar. Once a university student Youngmin saw Hyerin in the theater play, he falls in love at first sight and devotes himself to love. Because the film had no kissing or hugging, producer Lee Taewon did not expect commercial success, which turned out to be wrong. Right after the release, young audiences responded to the pure love the director Bae had intended. Youngmin was a man who would not mind standing in the rain for days only if he could earn her heart. His genuine love was rendered through the director’s long-take, Lee Myung-Se’s unique screenplay, Ahn Sungki’s performance, and Hwang Cine’s screen debut. The film ranked No.2 at the annual box office after Youth Sketch (1987) and was acclaimed as the best melodrama of the year. [HUH Nam-woong]
