My Dear KeumHong is a story of two artists’ odd friendship between a genius poet Lee Sang and a fauvist painter Koo Bonwoong. Keumhong (Lee Jieun) is a concubine who lives with Lee Sang but Koo secretly adores her. The film does not dig into Lee’s controversial works such as The Wings or Crow’s Eye View or Koo’s rough brush strokes and vivid colors in Woman with Blue Hair or Portrait of a Friend. Instead of their artistic worlds, the director focuses on the eccentricity of the two artists who shook up the existing order of Korea’s literary and art circles in the 1930s. The film follows Koo’s perspective on the romance between his friend and Keumhong. Their romance was playful and decadent, earnest and serious, and destructive in the end. The film concludes that it was Lee’s life. [HUH Nam-woong]
