During her final week of college, Riley goes to great lengths to win the affections of a boy from her hometown of Philly, and ends up confronting her escalating anxieties about her love life, family, and future.
Kit is the director and lead actor of Actual People. Based on this information, it is easy to assume that this is an autobiographical film, but in fact, Kit plays a fictional character Riley, in a fiction film. Through the unstable state of the protagonist, who feels lost about being unable to complete her university graduation project, the film shows the society that forces social success on the youth and the world full of anxiety resulting from it. The protagonist returns to her hometown in search of solace, but there she encounters more reasons for dissatisfaction. Romantic relationships get mixed up with racial issues, and more worries are added to her life. The film shows an aspect of the lives of people today whose presents are mortgaged for a perfect future, and the only solutions for their relentless rush of life are alcohol, crying, friends, and love for family.
