Review

This film is set in a world dominated by extreme Christian conservatism. Here, women must be beautiful, submissive, and virginal. This precept, preached by a political and religious leader, is physically implemented by a group of gangster-like strong men and a group of women who collectively harass so-called lustful women. Then one night, Mariana, a member of the women’s group, gets her face scarred while hunting down a woman. Losing an element of beauty that society imposes on women, Mariana is no longer able to belong in her group and searches for a breakthrough. Medusa is a modern variation on the story of Medusa in Greek mythology, who turns anyone that sees her into a stone. This film is a sharp criticism of Brazilian society's conservatism and depicts the awakening of women after their encounter with Medusa. Images with strong color contrasts and varied retro styled scores make this film even more absorbing. [MOON Seok]
