Represented by various delivery service companies and varied taxi application systems such as Uber, the so-called platform economy continues to grow even in the COVID-19 pandemic era amongst various business types using smartphone apps and the development of information technology. The platform economy has been so successful that it is estimated to have generated more than 5 trillion dollars worldwide and is projected to have a workforce of over 540 million by 2025, but there are also pains behind the spectacular growth. Director Shannon Walsh focuses on the lives of platform workers in several countries, including the United States, France, and China, to reveal the other side of them—what kind of price they are paying for their work and how the platform economy of a “winner-takes-all structure” is incurring social costs.
