Set inside the Shanghai Sixth People’s Hospital in China, the documentary features an old man devotedly caring for his half-conscious wife, a father who lost his wife in a car accident but sings every day for his daughter in intensive care, a wife worried about her husband’s difficult spine surgery, and many others. Patients and their families are all shabby “people” and are at a major turning point in their respective lives. They have to choose between the worst option and the alternative, or they have to bet on a hopeless tomorrow.
