Review

This is a new, heartfelt documentary about Cesária Évora, a singer born on the Western African island of Cape Verde in 1941 who rose to global fame at the age of 50. The first 45 years of Évora’s life were very difficult—her father passed away early in her childhood; she was abandoned in an orphanage a few years later; she had three failed marriages and suffered from binge drinking; she sang for a living but had to stop. However, she returned to music again and received recognition upon meeting a producer from her hometown in Portugal. Nicknamed the “Queen of Morna” for her renditions of mornas, the traditional music of Cape Verde, and “Barefoot Diva” for performing without shoes, as she was unable to afford them, Évora took the world stage. The sad history of Cape Verde, which was developed as an anchorage for the Portuguese slave trade, and the personal story of Cesária Évora, who overcame all kinds of difficulties through music, unfold with a number of never-before-seen footage, and Évora’s charming songs resonate deeply in the hearts of the audience.
