Milan Kundera: From the Joke to Insignificance

Director_ Miloslav ŠMIDMAJER

Czech Republic 2022 95min DCP Color/B&W feature Documentary
Review

Milan Kundera’s work was first introduced to Korea in 1988 and his popularity in Korea continues after 25 years of introduction as his 15 works collection was sold out only in France and Korea in 2013. However, Milan Kundera is wrapped in mystery. Why are the readers from all over the world excited about his works? Why does he write in French, turning back to his own country? Why did he ban the translation into Czech? Why is he a hermit? Helmer of the documentary on Miloš Forman, the Czech director, in 2009, Miloslav Šmidmajer directed Milan Kundera: From the Joke to the Insignificance searching for the answers to the questions raised about him and showing the life and art of the world-renowned writer with affluent material. Especially, the lecture he gave in the 1960s at the FAMU and selected movie clips based on his novels, and his days in France are the ones we cannot miss. [CHUN Jinsu]
