Studied camera and directing at FAMU. His debut The Cry (1963) was included in the main competition at the Cannes Film Festival. The culmination of his work are the adaptations The Joke (1968) based on the novel by Milan Kundera and the surreal Valerie and Her Week of Wonders (1970) based on the prose by Vítězslav Nezval.
