In 2019, the night in Hong Kong is still cloaked in mesmerizing beauty, but the landscape of everyday life is gradually changing. Perambulating the streets of Causeway Bay, the director documents the city’s rhythm and ambiance, along with an overpass.
Tsai Ming-Liang visits Hong Kong at the end of 2019 for a show centered around an old song. Like many Asians, he has childhood memories and affection for Hong Kong’s vibrant culture in the past. Walking through Causeway Bay at night after a turbulent day full of protests, he begins to photograph the scenery around him. A seemingly familiar city at night unfolds on the screen but as an old Chinese song from the 1940s is heard in the background, Tsai Ming-Liang's magic envelops the landscape of the city with heart and emotion.
