Hommage
Jiwan is a female film director. After the failure of her third film, she is struggling to survive. Meanwhile, the film archive asks her to restore the old film made in the 1960s. On the journey back to the 1960s to find some missing film footage, Jiwan meets the old filmmakers and asks herself, “What are ‘cinema’ and ‘life’ to her?”
Hommage, the latest work of Shin Su-won is the following story of Passerby#3 (2010), her debut film and it is about Hong Eun-won, the second woman director in Korean film history. Also, it is about all the female filmmakers in Korea. Jiwan, the woman director, has been disappointing since her film failed to attract public interest. While she also struggles with her new screenplay, she gets an assignment from the Korea Film Archive to restore the sound of an old film directed by a female director in the 1960s. To fill the gap of the information, she meets people related to the film and finds the shade of the director. Actor Lee Jungeun expresses Jiwan’s positiveness in the daily hardships with her unique real-life acting. The film drew positive public responses at the Tokyo IFF last year. [MOON Seok]
