To watch Prayer of the Isle, you need some preparation. The two-and-a-half-hour-long film does not kindly tell a story nor invite you with the pleasures of various splendid cuts. Instead, it leads you to the long-take scenes and dreamy images where you look into someone’s dream. The main character’s lonely life and the last part are well caught with an excellent cinematic technique. Sound effects and music are minimized in this film but these are the key to the making of the moods and atmosphere. Once you focus on the film, you can feel the woman’s memories, dreams, pains, and deep sorrow leaked out of fantasy. It is Park Soonlee’s latest work after her The Romance of a Mediocre Actress and a Short Bald Man in 2015 and Ephemerals to Remember in 2018 which were participated in the JEONJU IFF.
