The Cars We Drove Into Capitalism

Review

Those with an interest in automobiles have probably heard the name of the Czech car brand Skoda, which is now part of the Volkswagen Group. However, the names of car brands such as Lada in the former Soviet Union, Wartburg in former East Germany, and Zaz, also in the former Soviet Union in what is now Ukraine, may be unfamiliar. Cars produced in Eastern Bloc countries during the Cold War era were unique cars with only modest charm "manufactured faithfully to the socialist ideology", unlike western cars with splendid and high performance. But, surprisingly, these uncool, unsophisticated cars on the screen are “so pretty”. With the fall of the Eastern Bloc, these cars disappeared from people's memory, but there are still some people who love to collect and drive them. And to them, these cars are precious friends which helped many people in the former Eastern Bloc to escape to Western capitalism while longing for freedom. Regardless of what happened in their lives afterward. [CHUN Jinsu]
