Review

There are many films that show that children are not simply naive or that feature children with supernatural abilities. The Innocents is a unique horror-thriller film that melts these two themes into a Nordic-style melancholy. Ida, a girl who moves into a residential area in a suburb of Norway, learns that her older sister Anna, who has autism, Ben, a bullied boy, and Aisha, a girl with skin disease, all have special abilities. Their abilities don't show up well in the world with adults, but when they're together, their abilities are amplified and then become powerful beyond their control. However, their “superpowers” do not appear as heroic elements like in Hollywood movies. They can be read as both a metaphor for the adults' lives and an expression of children escaping from innocence, but it is clear that this film does not make the audience comfortable. [MOON Seok]
