Review

Monument Valley is a region of huge rocky mountains towering over the desert on the border of Arizona and Utah, USA, and it is said that the name of the rocky mountains resembles a monument. The Taking is an exploration of this Monument Valley and American history, as well as several films that have taken its topography as the main setting, especially John Ford and his westerns. Director Alexandre O. Philippe has made original documentary films about American films, including The People vs. George Lucas (2010), 78/52 (2017), and Memory: The Origins of Alien (2019). Through numerous film scenes and various interviews, he analyzes this region that has become a symbol of American pioneering history of the Westward expansion and furthermore has become a mythical landscape, and even shows how John Ford's Irish ancestry is related to it. The fact that the original owners of this region are Navajo people is also emphasized by this documentary. [MOON Seok]
