Review

This esoteric Afrofuturist, queer, sci-fi, and musical film is set in a village in Rwanda. The tyrannical forces not only exploit the village’s minerals but also dump digital waste at the looted villages. The village is thrown into chaos as a group of anti-colonial hackers resists the dictatorship, and anunexpected event happens when a mysterious intersex named “Memory” meets a miner who escaped from a coltan mine. The film expands on the theme raised by one of the co-directors, Saul Williams, in his “MartyrLoserKing” project. In his poem “Coltan As Cotton” published in 2015, he has already pointed out that digital technology in the 21st century advances through the exploitation of the analog. The West exploits minerals such as coltan in Africa to produce various digital devices, which is a “new type of slavery” comparable to the establishment of the cotton industry in the United States in the past. The imagination of post-colonialism and anti-capitalism moves along with fascinating music, breaking all stereotypes with characters who break the boundaries of boring normality. [Jay SOHN]
